Some quibble about the "equality of opportunity" and the "equality of outcomes." This dilemma is more easily dismissed when the question is restricted to health: we all pretty well agree that the sicker members of the human family deserve more health care; none of us wants to "play the system" and be sicker on purpose to get more health care.<br /><br />But when it comes to income and wealth, we generally believe that poverty provides the necessary "stick" and greed the "carrot" to make us more productive. Is this a fallacy or good social science?<br /><br />I think it comes down to Trust and Reciprocity. What are the processes and conditions which build trust between us, and that destroy trust?
